Video Game Marketing Plan: A Guide for 2026
In the world of an indie video game, creativity is limitless, but visibility isn’t. Every week, thousands of new titles appear on Steam, itch.io, and consoles, each competing for attention in an increasingly crowded market. As indie developers, we often focus on building the game itself, but the truth is simple: a great game without a great marketing plan is invisible.
This guide breaks down how to build a video game marketing plan that actually works in 2026, and why understanding that not all games are created equal is the key to marketing for indies.
Why “Not All Video Games Are Created Equal” Matters in Marketing
Some games are instantly marketable. Others need more context, more storytelling, or more community building. Some genres explode on TikTok; others thrive on Reddit or YouTube. Some games rely on mechanics; others rely on atmosphere.
This is why marketing for indie games cannot follow a one-size-fits-all formula.
Your game’s marketing plan must be shaped by:
- Its genre
- Its art style
- Its core hook
- Its emotional appeal
- Its target audience
- Its competitive landscape
Understanding these differences is the foundation of a successful strategy, and it’s exactly what a specialized indie game marketing agency like IndiePump helps developers identify.
Step 1: Define Your Video Game’s Unique Marketing Identity
Before you create trailers, TikToks, or Steam capsules, you need clarity on what makes your game marketable.
Ask yourself:
- What is the core fantasy of my game?
- What is the one sentence hook that makes people care?
- What emotion does my game evoke?
- What genre expectations do players already have?
- What visual or mechanical element stands out instantly?
This identity becomes the backbone of your marketing plan.
Step 2: Identify Your Video Game’s Real Target Audience (Not the One You Wish You Had)
Many indie developers say “my game is for everyone.”
But in marketing, “everyone” means “no one.”
Your audience must be:
- Specific
- Reachable
- Active on platforms you can target
- Interested in your genre
Examples:
- Cozy farming fans on TikTok
- Soulslike players on YouTube
- Narrative‑driven gamers on Reddit
- Horror fans on Twitch
Once you know your audience, you can tailor your content, tone, and platform strategy.
Step 3: Choose the Right Platforms for Your Video Game
Not all platforms work for all games. Here’s how to choose strategically:
TikTok
Perfect for:
- Cozy games
- Horror
- Roguelites
- Visual novelty
- Satisfying mechanics
YouTube
Perfect for:
- Deep systems
- Devlogs
- Lore
- Tutorials
- Long-form storytelling
Twitter/X
Perfect for:
- Community building
- Developer personality
- Networking with other indies
Steam
Perfect for:
- Conversion
- Wishlists
- Long-term visibility

Step 4: Build a Marketing Timeline That Matches Your Video Game’s Needs
A strong video game marketing plan is not just about what you do, it’s about when you do it.
Pre‑Alpha
- Introduce the concept
- Share early prototypes
- Start building community
Alpha
- Show gameplay loops
- Share devlogs
- Test your hook
Beta
- Release trailers
- Push wishlist campaigns
- Collaborate with creators
Launch
- Paid ads (if budget allows)
- Press outreach
- Influencer activations
- Community events
Post‑Launch
- Updates
- DLC teasers
- Community engagement
Each phase should have clear goals, KPIs, and content formats.
Step 5: Analyze Your Video Game’s Competition (Because Players Do)
Your game doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Players compare everything. Art style, mechanics, price, and even store page layout.
Study:
- Top games in your genre
- Their trailers
- Their TikTok content
- Their Steam pages
- Their community tone
This helps you position your game strategically instead of guessing.
Step 6: Build a Conversion Funnel That Actually Works with your Video Game
Marketing is not just about visibility, it’s about moving players from awareness to action.
A strong indie game funnel looks like this:
TikTok → Steam Page → Wishlist → Community → Launch Purchase
Or:
YouTube → Discord → Steam Page → Wishlist → Launch Purchase
Every piece of content should push players one step deeper into your ecosystem.
Step 7: Accept That Your Video Game’s Marketing Needs Are Unique
Some games need daily TikToks.
Some need cinematic trailers.
Some need influencer campaigns.
Some need community-driven storytelling.
Some need paid ads.
Some need none of the above.
This is why not all games are created equal, and why your marketing plan must be tailored, not generic.
